On Sun September 17th people around the world will put one foot in front of the other in the name of Terry Fox.
The Terry Fox run will be held at the main beach. New BA1 stage area -87 Beach Drive. Registration: 8:30am Start: 10:00 am. Participants will be collecting pledges and will be running or walking a 10km, 5km, or a 1km route. Proceeds go to the Terry Fox Foundation to fund cancer research. Over the years, the event has raised more than $650-million. Fox set off from St. John’s, Newfoundland on a cross-Canada run on April 12, 1980 after having a leg amputated as a result of bone cancer. While in hospital, Fox was inspired by the other cancer patients, especially the children.
After running 5,373 kilometres in 143 days, Fox was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay on Sept. 1, 1980 because cancer had appeared in his lungs. Fox died on June 28, 1981 at the age 22.
The Wasaga Beach event is family-friendly and run begins at 10 am at the new BA1 Stage. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The route is wheelchair accessible.
